2005 Data Feedback Report
The
The Data Feedback Report was initiated to provide each institution a context for examining the data they submitted to the IPEDS. NEPC’s goal in producing this report is to provide useful information to institutional executives to help improve the quality and comparability of IPEDS data.
Information provided in this report is based on the 2004-2005 IPEDS data submitted by Mountain State University (MSU). MSU data is compared against the mean values from a list of peer institutions generated by NPEC. Using some of MSU’s characteristics, NPEC selected a group of 27 comparison institutions. The characteristics include private, not-for-profit, 4 year, degree granting, Carnegie Classification of Baccalaureate/Associates Colleges.
Unduplicated
12-month Headcount and Average FTE
The unduplicated 12-month headcount, total full time equivalent (FTE) enrollment for academic year 2003-2004, full-time fall 2004 enrollment and part-time fall 2004 enrollment indicate that MSU exceeds the average of the peer group in all four areas. The unduplicated 12-month headcount of the peer group is 1,333 while MSU’s is 5,806. The peer group average for FTE enrollment is 1,002 while MSU’s is 3,504. MSU’s full-time enrollment is 3,138 while the peer group average is 858. Finally the part-time enrollment for the peer group averages 291 while MSU’s is 969.
Percent of
The percent of students enrolled by selected categories of race and ethnicity shows that MSU exceeds the peer group average in white, non-Hispanic with 84% where the peer group averaged 76%. MSU tied the peer group average of Black, non-Hispanic with 9%. MSU fell below on Hispanic with only 2% while the peer group averaged 3%. MSU tied with the peer group in the percent of Asian or Pacific Islander at 1% and exceeded the peer average in the percentage of American Indian or Alaska Native with 1% versus 0% for the peer group. MSU had 0% with Race/ethnicity unknown while the peer group average was 2%. Finally, MSU exceeded the peer average in nonresident alien with 2% versus 1% for the peer group.
Academic Year
Tuition and Required Fees
In reviewing the trend of academic year tuition and required fees for the last three years, MSU has been consistently lower than the peer group average over the three years. In 2002-2003 MSU was at $4,570 while the peer group average was $11,700. In 2003-2004 MSU was at $5,040 while the peer group average was $12,929. In 2004-2005 MSU was at $5,400 while the peer group average was $13,624.
The
percent of first-time, full-time, degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate
students receiving financial aid is shown in the next graph and is based on the
fall 2003 enrollment counts as reported to IPEDS. Since many students use several types of
financial aid to meet their financial obligations the percentages reflected
here will exceed 100%. The percentage of
students receiving federal grants is similar with MSU’s students receiving 65%
while the peer group average is 53%. The
percentage of students receiving loans is also similar with 63% for MSU and 65%
for the peer group. There is a larger
disparity between MSU and the peer group both in state and local grants and
institutional grants. In the state and
local grants MSU students received 10% while the peer group average is 52%. The institutional grants show MSU at 16%
while the peer group average is 77%.
This indicates that students from the peer group are receiving more in
state and local grants as well as institutional grants than MSU students.
Types and Average
Amounts of Financial Aid Received
In examining the average amount of financial aid received for the full year by first-time, full-time, degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate students receiving financial aid the data indicates that MSU students are receiving more aid from three out of the four types of aid. MSU students average $3,354 per year while the peer group average is $2,781 in federal grants received. In the state and local grants, MSU students averaged $3,072 while the peer group averaged $2,010. In the loans, MSU students averaged $5,266 while the peer group average was $3,635. The only type of aid where MSU students averaged less was in the institutional grants. This category showed MSU students averaging $2,541 while the peer group averaged $3,089.
Retention Rates
Retention rates were determined by the number of first-time, full- and part-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates returning from fall 2003 to fall 2004. Graduation rates were determined by the percent of the 1998 cohort who completed a degree/certificate or who transferred out. As the graph indicates, MSU’s retention rate of 61% for full-time students returning exceeded the peer average of 59%. However, MSU’s 32% of part-time returning students fell below the peer group average of 38%. The graduation rate as a percent of all undergraduates was 8% while the peer group averaged 19%. MSU graduation rate as a percent of entering class was 29% which was also below the peer average of 66%.
Graduation Rates
by Race/Ethnicity
Graduation rates were determined by the full-time, first time degree/certificate seeking undergraduates by race/ethnicity: 1998 cohort. MSU fell below the peer average on the total 1998 cohort graduation rate with 26% while the peer average was 38%. MSU fell below the peer average in all race/ethnicity categories except nonresident alien where MSU averaged 71% while the peer average was 35%.
Number of Degrees
Awarded by Level
MSU exceeded the number of degrees awarded in all three levels in which MSU awards degrees. MSU issued 191 master’s degrees while the peer group averaged 0. MSU awarded 386 bachelor’s degrees while the peer group averaged 132. Finally, MSU awarded 130 associate’s degrees while the peer group averaged 64.
Core Revenues per
FTE Student by Source
In examining the core revenues per full time equivalent (FTE) student by revenue source, MSU’s core revenues are substantially less than those of the peer group both in the tuition and fees as well as the other core revenues. As the graph indicates, MSU generates $7,116 for each FTE while the average for members of the peer group is $10.403. MSU is producing only 68% of what the peer group produces in core revenues from tuition and fees. This indicates that per FTE tuition and fees are considerably lower than those charged by institutions in the peer group. MSU is also substantially lower than their peer group with only $135 generated by private gifts, grants and contracts versus $1,100 for the mean value from the group. Investment returns show MSU earning $21 per FTE while the peer group earns an average of $636 per FTE. Finally, MSU earns $704 per FTE in other core revenues while the peer group averaged $1,356 per FTE. Core revenues exclude revenues from auxiliary enterprises, hospitals and independent operations.
Core Expenses per
FTE student, by Function
In examining core expenses per FTE by function, the data indicates that MSU’s overall expenses are substantially lower than those of the peer group. Instructional expenses for MSU were $2,899 per FTE while the peer group averaged $5,297 per FTE. This is only 55% of what the peer group averages. Academic support expenses are 64% of the peer group average, institutional support is 60% of the peer group averages, student service expenses are 26% of what the peer group averages, and other core expenses are 367% of the average for the peer group. In general, core expenses exclude expenses for auxiliary enterprises, independent operations and hospitals.
Percent of FTE
Professional Staff by Assigned Position
The final section of the 2005 IPEDS Data Feedback Report is
the percent of FTE professional staff by assigned position. The data indicates that 51% of the MSU’s
staff is primarily instructional which is slightly lower than the peer group’s
53% instructional staff. MSU is also lower
than the peer group average in the percentage of executive/administrative and
managerial staff. MSU has 19% where the
peer group averages 20%. MSU exceed the
peer group average in other professional personnel with 30% while the peer
group averaged 26%.
