2005-2006 Graduation Rates Graduation Rates
Introduction Graduation Rates are a major key to the success of Mountain State University (MSU). In addition to getting the students, the students must also graduate. Graduation Rates are also a measure by which the quality of a school is judged. U.S. News stated that the graduation rate shows the effect of the college’s programs and policies. In looking at graduation rates it is important to understand that there are two important measures that are reported to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS). These measures are the percentage of students graduating within 6 years (150% of the normal length for the degree) and the student’s right to know 4-year average graduation rate. These measures are based on tracking the fall cohort of incoming freshmen and determining how many of these students graduate within 4, 5 and 6 years. The cohort includes all full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate students entering the institution during the fall term of the cohort year. Reporting to IPEDS is based on: 1) overall graduation rates; 2) the major sports of football, basketball and baseball; and 3) all other sports. Therefore, in analyzing the historical graduation rates for MSU, there are three distinct groups that IPEDS requires that we report on; 1) Overall; 2) Basketball; and 3) All Other Sports. Analysis IPEDS began requiring institutions to report graduation rates for the 2002-2003 academic year which was the 1996 cohort. To insure consistency in reporting of graduation rates, MSU’s historical graduation rates reported here will begin with that academic year. The overall completion rate for six-year completers improved from 19.4% in 2002-2003 to 27.4% in 2003-2004 and has remained fairly constant at around 26-27%. The 2005-2006 graduation rate was 27.1%. The 4-year average graduation rate has improved over the last four years from 19.4% in 2002-2003 to 25% in 2005-2006. The basketball six-year completion rate has fluctuated sharply over the last four year from 0% to 41.7% before falling to 0% for the last two academic years. The 4-year average graduation rate has also fluctuated from 0% to 38.5% ending at 29% for the 2005-2006 academic year. The completion rate for all other sports includes women's softball and volleyball. The graduation rate for all other sports has fallen over the last four years from 100% in 2002-2003 to 14.3% in 2005-2006.
