2006-2007 Fall Course
Evaluations
Introduction
In the past, reporting the results
of the student course evaluations was very limited. The
collection process produced a paper summary for each course
which did not allow any type of summary information to be
produced easily.
The University purchased the
Scantron Class Climate®
system in July of 2006 and began using the system in the
2006-2007 fall semester. This system allows summary information
not only by course but also by school/department and university
wide. The University began the implementation of this new system
by producing paper surveys for all traditional in-seat courses
offered. This included some of the in-seat courses offered at
the branch campus locations. The remainder of the online,
independent study, cohort and branch campus courses were
evaluated under their existing systems. These other methods of
instructional delivery will be phased into the Class Climate
system in the near future.
The standard course evaluation is
divided into three sections: 1) About the Instructor; 2) About
the Course; and 3) About the Facilities. There are 13 questions
about the instructor, 16 questions about the course and 3
questions about the facilities. The responses to each question
are based on a Likert scale from 1 to 5 where 1 indicates
Always and 5 indicates Never. Based on this
criteria the perfect score would be an average of 1.
Analysis
Information from the course
evaluations was exported from the Class Climate system to
provide an overall university wide distribution of responses for
trend analysis. This is entitled the Course
Evaluation Trend Analysis in the links listed below. As new
semesters are entered the trend will become more apparent.
There were 3,518 responses entered
into the course evaluations for the fall 2006-2007 semester.
There were quite a few "No Response" to questions in that the
percentage of "No Response" ranged from 30% to 46% for each
question. Upon closer examination of the detail information it
appears that there were at least 176 blank surveys entered.
While this does not affect the mean, median or standard
deviation shown in the Class Climate results future
efforts should be made to persuade students to complete the
survey.
The information provided in the
Class Climate information includes an executive summary with
histogram of responses along with the overall mean, median,
standard deviation and abstention for the each group overall, by
section and by question. There are four executive summaries
provided: 1) University Wide; 2) School of Arts and Sciences; 3)
School of Business and Technology; and 4) School of Health
Sciences.
The 2006-2007 Fall Class Climate
University Wide Executive Summary link shows the
information provided by the Class Climate system. We see that
the overall average for all questions for every course was 1.58.
The average for the instructor was 1.52, the course was 1.59 and
the facilities was 1.65. Thus,
according to the
students' opinions, the ranking order based on the
responses show that overall the instructors (1.53) had the best score followed by the
course (1.58) and finally the facilities (1.65).
The 2006-2007 Fall Class Climate
School of Health Sciences Executive Summary link shows the
information provided by the Class Climate system. We see that
the overall average for all questions for every course was 1.55.
The average for the instructor was 1.44, the course was 1.51 and
the facilities was 1.71. These are ranked in the same order as
the university wide averages and are slightly higher than the
university wide averages. Thus,
according to the
students' opinions, the School of Health Sciences was
ranked at number one for instructors and courses and
number three for facilities.
The 2006-2007 Fall Class Climate
School of Arts and Sciences Executive Summary link shows
the information provided by the Class Climate system. We see
that the overall average for all questions for every course was

order as the university wide averages and are slightly higher
than the university wide averages. Thus,
according to the
students' opinions, the School of Arts and Sciences was
ranked at number two for instructors and courses and number
one for facilities.
